January 2014 Health and Fitness in My Forties

I am checking in to let you all know that I am alive and well.  I've missed blogging. I've been recovering from being ill. I have so much blog about and am bursting at the seams to get back to it!  I hope that the Holiday season was wonderful for you.  We have quite a bit of catching up to do!

How many of you have made some sort of fitness resolution this year?  I've never really been one to make resolutions but this year I need to make health and fitness my priority. I'm approaching year 43!

Today I got off of my butt during a break at work.  I went for a nice walk then ran some stairs!  I am eliminating the excuse that I have been using for far too long: I just don't have time to get to the gym.  Bonus: No crowds = no waiting for a stair machine.

I need the exercise to get me out of the funk that I have been in.  I have some Groupons to dust off so I'll be chatting soon about my Yoga, Pilates, and work day walk adventures.  I know that so many of us make plans to start the year off with health and fitness goals. I admit that I am one of those folks.  What struck a chord with me was a chat that I had with our 3 year old son.  One afternoon he looked and me and said that he didn't want me to get old. I didn't have the heart to tell him that I am already pretty old in comparison to most mommies with 3 year old children. I'm 42. I'm going to fight the aging process as much as I can. I'm fighting to stay young, healthy, and fit. I'm going to work for my son's wish for me to stay young.  I'd love to know what motivates YOU.

  1. Good luck with your fitness goals for the year! I think it's awesome that you took a break at work to walk the stairs. Keep it up, every little bit counts!

    1. Thank you! I need to squeeze in every moment that I can find to be more active! Some days are tougher than others but like you said - every little bit counts!

  2. I'll glad you're feeling better! It's awesome that you're encouraged to stay healthy, but don't take what your son says too personally - preschoolers think 10 is old! ;)

  3. Glad that you are feeling better now. I too have some fitness goals and since going to the gym is out for me too due to the kids school schedule I am relying on my personal trainer- Wii. for some lunchtime exercise sessions:)

  4. Best of luck in your fitness endeavors! I am working on getting back into the exercise routine after a long bout of illness as well. Right now I am just focusing on doing some toning exercises each day. It's from a book first published in the 60s called "Miss Craig's 21 Shape Up Program". The pictures are a hoot, but the exercises really do work, as I have done the program off and on since I was a teenager (imagine if I had actually done it on a regular basis all those years, but oh well!) I plan to add some light aerobic workout a few days a week soon, but baby steps for now. My main goal is to have more energy, but I definitely want to lose some weight and tone up as well. My biggest motivator is being able to keep up with my two year old, which is no easy feat! :)

  5. It is always a good thing to have a goal for the new year. Fitness Goals seem to be a trend this year, I've noticed a lot of people have aspired to get fit in 2014. All the best to you on your challenge...may 2014 be your year for success.

  6. Visiting from the group at vB.

I had my children when I was 35, 36 and 41. Would have liked to have another, but time caught up with me. But I wouldn't trade the ones I have now for anything!

Congratulations for taking care of yourself by increasing your physical activity! I understand about having to fit it in around work and family. But it may be encouraging to know that the best shape I was ever in was when I went to a gym before going to work (5-6 days per week). You GO, Mama! :O)

  7. When I worked a few years ago, I would walk for 20-30 minutes at lunch. It worked out well and it made a huge difference. I would just sit in the lunch room or in my car, wasting time. Lunch time allowed me to exercise a bit and it didn't cut into my "family" time. Keep up the good work.

  8. Your post is inspiring! I love that you're using the stairs in your building for exercise. The best thing I've done to stay young (at age 54) is becoming a holistic health coach. My before and after pictures are an amazing testimony that eating the right foods and creating balance in all the areas of my life really can keep us younger! I feel like I've reversed the clock 20 years!
