Finding Ways To Keep Fit In My Forties

Being a working mom is tough for me. Yes, I am being a bit of a cry baby. I know that there are so many moms out there that find ways to make it work with apparent ease. For me, it's a constant struggle. But I am trying. Always trying. That counts, right?

Reminder: I am 42 years old. I work full time outside of the home. I have a 3 year old son. Thankfully, I am married to a husband that is supportive.  I adore my family and I want to spend time with them.  I would even like to have another child. WOW - I said that out loud and put it in writing on my blog.  We will save that tidbit for another blog post.

Time. I can't find enough of the darn thing. And when I do have a moment I mostly want to veg out and relax. To clear my mind and get some exercise in - I have learned to be resourceful.  I would love to hit the yoga studio for a 90 minute practice. That isn't very practical right now.  Our kid is growing up so fast!  I want to have every moment that I can with him.  There isn't much time from when I get home from work until he nods off to bed.  If forced to choose between heading to gym or rushing home to our son - I will always pick my son.

Thank goodness for break time at work.  I have found two ways get get my fitness in without cutting in to precious family time. I can run parking structure stairs AND hit a running trail just STEPS away from our building.

I try to do workout videos at home but there are too many distractions. With a 3 year old wanting to climb on me during yoga poses and my husband cracking me up - it's hard to find a zen moment!

For now I hit the trail or tackle the stairs.  Sometimes, you just don't NEED a gym membership. Reminder: cancel gym membership.

How do YOU find your balance with mom life? Are you able to squeeze in time to workout? I'd love your tips.

  1. I wake up at 5:30am about 5 days a week. I feel like I can have that bit of "me" time when everyone else is still sleeping, and I don't have to feel guilty.:)

    1. Lisa - brilliant idea. I think that I'll have to channel your "morning person" skills and try that myself!

  2. I'm not 40 yet, but it's hard to find time to fit exercise. I don't have stairs or a trail or a work break like you do. I work from home. It's just something I have to remember to fit in. Thanks for the reminder. :)

    1. Maggie - I often wonder what it would be like to work from home! Maybe one day I'll make that a reality!

  3. I wish I had an answer for you but I just don't. I'm working from home and my little is beyond the toddler stage so it's easier to carve out time. However, at 44 exercise isn't as easy and doesn't always have the same results as it did when I was 24. The hashtag in the FitBloggin' world is #wycwyc what you can when you can and I try to live by that. You've got plenty of virtual supporters here. I will say that NetFlix and Amazon Prime Instant Video now have a lot of exercise videos available. I've been trying them out as part of my #wycwyc efforts too.

  4. Cynthia, I am a stay at home Mom of 6 children, we homeschool and one has special needs, and I can never find enough of that stuff called, 'time.' I do find it hard to find time for fitness. I find small things add up walking to the mailbox playing with the kids, parking farther from the store. It is a work in progress for me. I think your wise for fitting it in where you can!

    1. Cheryl, I applaud you. I only have one child and find myself stretched thin. Playing with the kiddos is a lovely way to be active! It's one of my faves!

  5. Definitely still trying to fit this in, what do I give up to make it happen? Sleep? Blogging?

    1. Skye I hear you loud and clear! I generally let the blogging fall by the wayside when my choice is either to sleep or blog. I've learned that sleep deprivation is not worth the impact it has on me. I do bend the rules if I have deadlines ;)
