Stress Management for A Middle Aged Mom

This post is written in partnership with GigaSavvy, for whom I create original editorial content.

I am always open to learning new ways of finding ways to improve quality of life. I found some interesting facts on the Molina Healthcare website in regarding stress. According to Molina: Most of us have more stress in our life than is healthy for us. Too much stress makes blood sugar levels go up. Too much stress can raise blood pressure. Stress eating? Yes, I'm sure that we have all been there.

What stresses me out? Work. Worry. Deadlines. What calms me down? Being with my family, prayer, and taking walks.

Calendars and being over-scheduled adds pressure and stress.

I am trying my best to be as healthy as I can be. I am on the verge of 44. I have a 4 year old son and a 40 year old hubby.  I am striving for good health and happy times with my guys! As I've gotten older I've noticed that stressful events take a bigger toll on me than in the past.

This is the view of my work day walks. Taking a walk with this view easily erases office stress.

Managing my stress levels is something that I am continuously working to achieve. I have been getting better at taking care of myself, but it does take conscious effort.  I need to remind (force) myself to eat breakfast, get adequate sleep, to take breaks, and to be realistic about setting boundaries. Many moms that I know tend to focus on everything and everyone first.  It's easy to lose sight of self care. Bad move. We must take care of ourselves so that we can be there for our loved ones.

Check out these stats about stress:

  • Research has shown that stress contributes to half of all illness in the United States.
  • Between 70 and 80 percent of all doctor’s visits are stress related.

  • I've done some homework and found that Molina Healthcare has some easy ways to Say NO to Stress.

Here are some ways to start:

    • 1. Eat a healthy and well balanced diet.
    • 2. Take supportive vitamins like vitamin C and vitamin B complex.
    • 3. Decrease your intake of caffeine and sugar, and STOP smoking.
    • 4. Exercise daily!
    • 5. Deep breathing and relaxation exercises.
    • 6. Get an adequate amount of sleep each night.
    • 7. Laugh more!

How stressed are you? Take the Stress Test offered by Molina. It's free, takes just a couple of minutes, and it can be helpful in finding your overload score. 10-19 = Low stress 20-25 = Moderate stress 26-40 = High stress.

As an aging working mom - I find myself tired most of the time. It's tough trying to find balance. I am making strides to up my energy level and improve my overall health. What works best for me in boosting my energy and clearing my mind is a simple walk. Getting outside of my office does wonders, even if it is just a for a brisk 10 minute walk.  I've also discovered essential oils and aromatherapy which really does the trick! Yoga is also one of my favorites but finding the time to practice at my favorite yoga studio is tough. Most of the time a simple cup of tea and a quick phone call to my Mom is all I need to turn a stressful day around.

Other AWESOME stress busters: hugs and kisses from my husband and son, a visit to the spa, attending events with my blogging friends, a good belly laugh, and the rare nap!

I'd love to hear about your favorite ways to rid yourself of unhealthy stress. Please share your suggestions.

    National Wear Red Day #GoRedSelfie

Today is  National Wear Red Day. What are you wearing? Today is a reminder and a way to increase awareness. I am encouraged to live a heart-healthy life. Not just today but for the rest of my life.

Heart disease and stroke KILL 1 in 3 women, yet it's 80% preventable. It's NOT just a man's disease. In fact more women than men die every year from heart disease and stroke.  I for one have MANY women in my life that I love. Think of those around you and imagine IF 1 in 3 of them were to die from heart disease and stroke... I for one would be devastated! The good news: we can prevent this! I want to live a long and healthful life and work for that.  I am an older mom. My son is only 4 year old. I am on the verge of 44. I want to be around for him!

I took part and wore my red today! Sadly, I was the ONLY ONE in my office to do so! Here I am in my RED showing my support!  Taking selfies is not my favorite thing to do, in fact I think that selfies are HARD. In my show of support, I did it anyway! After a bazillion tries, I picked this one.

Let's take care of ourselves and the women we love. Pass it on!

Join the SheKnows Media and Public Radio International #WomensLives Initiative as a Social Outreach Contributor

Today is an exciting day. February 3, 2015 is the official launch of the #WomensLives Initiative. The #WomensLives Initiative is a social publishing news incubator combining PRI’s in-depth enterprise reporting on women around the world with unprecedented outreach by SheKnows to impact conversation in news media—because women’s lives are newsworthy.

#womenslivesIn partnering with SheKnows Media and Public Radio International, I am joining a network of bloggers and social media influencers who are passionate about women's issues, and the value of journalism. I am thrilled to be a part of this groundbreaking journalism project. I will be joining others in sharing stories and changing the conversation about women in news media. One of the goals of the initiative is to help amplify and start conversations around women's issues, and I hope that you will join in on the discussion. YOU are invited.

Please read more from Lisa Stone (Chief Community Officer @SheKnows, Co-founder @BlogHer) : You're Invited: SheKnows Media and PRI Announce News Incubator.

Message from Lisa Stone: "This effort officially launches Feb. 3, 2015. If you would like to participate in the conversation, we invite you to leverage our investment in the #womenslives hashtag to promote your own coverage of women's lives if it fits our description of coverage we want to celebrate, as well as help share stories you think matter."

I joined the initiative in most part due to the most amazing woman in MY life. My Mom. She is a saint and and a warrior. She has survived many things and endured more than I thought any woman could endure. Her grace and courage is an inspiration and reminder that women’s lives MATTER. Through her I have learned that we must speak up, speak out, and never be silent when we can make a difference to improve the life of another. It is for women like my mom that I will share my voice.

Disclosure: This is not a sponsored post. I am voluntarily sharing my efforts as a social outreach contributor and partner. All opinions are my own.

Let's Talk Turkey Tacos at Del Taco #EatWellWithDel #TurkeyTaco + GIVEAWAY

Our thanks to Del Taco for letting us share our Turkey Taco experience by sponsoring this post.

Visit Del Taco and try their lean seasoned ground turkey recipe developed by JENNIE-O. Here are your choices:
    • Turkey Taco (crunchy or soft)
    • Turkey Combo Burrito
    • Deluxe Turkey Taco Salad
    • Turkey CrunchTada Tostada

Turkey is a good way to kick off the New Year! Turkey Tacos are only 150 calories each; a better-for-you alternative for Del Taco guests.

Every Del Taco restaurant operates a working kitchen where many ingredients are prepared fresh daily, including:

    • Cheddar cheese freshly-grated daily from 40-pound blocks
    • Lard-free beans, slow-cooked from scratch every three hours
    • Handmade pico de gallo salsa, chopped fresh from onions, tomatoes and cilantro
    • Marinated chicken grilled in-restaurant daily

Every Sunday after Church my family eats out for lunch. It gives us a chance to slow down and not have to worry about cooking or cleaning. We take turns on who gets to pick the restaurant.  On a recent Sunday our 4 year old suggested a picnic.  We loved his idea and had an impromptu picnic at Mission Bay in San Diego. We needed "easy to eat without utensils" fare. Tacos!  Del Taco was very close to our picnic spot so that was a bonus!  We tried the new Turkey Tacos. Our son is a fan of quesadillas so naturally he asked for the quesadilla kids meal. We gobbled it up and enjoyed our day outdoors. Luckily we remembered to take at least one picture of it before it was gone. The Turkey Tacos have has 33 percent less fat than Del Taco’s seasoned beef, but I couldn't taste the difference since they had all the flavor of the beef tacos. I think that I will stick with the Turkey tacos and save on the fat and calories! Don't forget to visit the Del Taco website to claim a coupon for a FREE turkey taco!

We are pleased to host a $20 giftcard giveaway to Del Taco for one of our readers.  To enter use the Rafflecopter widget.  Open to U.S. residents. Prize will be sent directly from sponsor. We are not responsible for prize fulfillment. Winner must respond within 24 hours or an alternate winner will be selected. Good luck!
