In Observance of Lent

In 2013, Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 13.  In Observance of Lent this year I am committing to the following:

1) Giving up soda, white bread, and white rice.

2) Gathering 3 items each day and set aside for a weekly donation.

3) Cut all spending with the exception of gasoline & groceries.

4) Reading the Bible or spiritual books 10 minutes a day.

Whether you practice the observance of Lent (or not) how do feel about committing yourself fully for 40 days and 40 nights?

I don't observe Lent personally, but eating healthily, exercising regularly and refraining from over-spending are things I commit to on a daily basis, all year long.

I think committing to doing or not doing something for 40 days is a great way to establish good habits that stick.
I think your choices were great!

While I don't practice Lent specifically, our church does start the year with a 21 day challenge -- this year it included reading all four gospels in a week. It's great to cut back on self-focus and remind ourselves to focus on those things important to God. Blessings to you this Easter season.

Good for you! I definitely wouldn't mind cut down on some of these things, health-wise. But it's great you're taking your faith as a follower of Jesus.
